Warm Congratulations to Prof. Xiujun Cai on His Election to the Chinese Academy of Sciences

On November 21, 2025, the Chinese Academy of Sciences officially announced its newly elected academicians. Prof. Xiujun Cai, a renowned surgeon and Advisory Editor of Mini-invasive Surgery from Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, China, was among the newly elected members. Prof. Cai is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in minimally invasive surgery, particularly in laparoscopic liver procedures, and for his outstanding contributions to the development of minimally invasive medicine in China.

Prof. Xiujun Cai serves as Chief Physician and PhD supervisor at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital. He also holds leadership positions as Vice Chair of the Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and Chair of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of England, a Changjiang Distinguished Professor, and one of the first batch of "Special-Grade Experts" of Zhejiang Province (China).

With nearly 40 years of clinical experience, Prof. Cai is a pioneering figure in hepatobiliary-pancreatic and minimally invasive surgery. He has performed over 1,000 laparoscopic liver resections. He invented the laparoscopic multifunctional operative dissector, established techniques such as liver resection by curettage and aspiration, degradable intestinal stents and new surgical procedures, and developed the completely laparoscopic "two-step" liver resection with a round-the-liver ligature. He is the founder of the discipline of minimally invasive surgery in China and has trained numerous surgeons, greatly advancing the nationwide development of minimally invasive medicine.

Prof. Cai's remarkable contributions have been recognized with numerous national and provincial awards, including the National Technology Invention Award, the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the Wu Jieping Medical Innovation Award, and the Zhejiang Science and Technology Progress Award. As an Advisory Editor of Mini-invasive Surgery, he has provided invaluable academic guidance, significantly contributing to the journal's development.
