Special Topic Introduction

The sustainable development of lithium batteries has become a critical issue in the global energy transition. Over the past five years, demand for lithium batteries has nearly tripled. According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the global battery market is expected to quadruple in value by 2030 on the pathway toward net-zero emissions. However, the production and recycling of lithium batteries continue to face challenges, including resource consumption and environmental pollution.

 

Accelerating the sustainable development of lithium batteries is therefore imperative. Key priorities include developing more efficient battery technologies, such as solid-state and sodium-ion batteries; optimizing battery recycling systems to improve resource efficiency; and promoting green manufacturing processes to reduce carbon emissions during production. Governments should increase support for research and development in lithium battery technologies, establish stringent environmental standards, and foster collaborative innovation across the industrial chain. At the same time, enterprises should be encouraged to adopt circular economy models and establish comprehensive battery recycling networks to ensure environmental sustainability throughout the entire life cycle of lithium batteries. Through concerted efforts across multiple fronts, the sustainable development of lithium batteries can provide critical support for the global energy transition and the achievement of carbon neutrality.

1. Drivers and emission reduction pathways of life-cycle carbon footprints of power batteries;

2. Dynamic tracking of power battery carbon footprints and multidimensional environmental impact assessment;

3. Mechanisms underlying the influence of battery technology maturity on pollution and carbon emission reduction potential;

4. Spatial heterogeneity analysis and temporal evolution forecasting of power battery carbon footprints;

5. Pathways to carbon neutrality in the power battery industry: Synergies among technology, policy, and markets;

6. Assessment of pollution and carbon emission reduction potential associated with lithium battery recycling and reuse;

7. Forecasting carbon benefit potential and value realization mechanisms in the lithium battery industry;

8. Life-cycle carbon footprint accounting and low-carbon optimization strategies for charging infrastructure;

9. Pathways toward low-carbon intelligent manufacturing of lithium batteries: Technological upgrading and system optimization;

10. Equity considerations in carbon trading and carbon policies for the deployment of battery technologies;
